Tomorrow my little brother heads off to his freshman year of college. I still can’t believe it. For the past few weeks I’ve been trying to give him my best college advice; things I wish I had known before starting my freshman year. Because as much as you think you know what college is going to be like, you’ll face more surprises than expected. So I thought I’d share some of my words of wisdom (common sense) with you!
1. DON'T SKIP CLASS.
Throughout the semester there will be many times when you just want to blow off class to take a nap. Or you’re still hungover from the weekend and just can’t possibly sit through a two hour lecture. Or your Netflix binge is so strong you literally can not stop until you finish the entire season. Whatever your “excuse” is, don’t fall for it. GO. TO. CLASS. Trust me, not going, or creating the bad habit of not going to class can have some serious consequences later on in your college career.
2. READ THROUGH THE CLASS CATALOGUE.
This might seem a little extra, but completely knowing what you’re signing up for (like your major, minor, classes etc.,) can save you a lot of time and stress. I went into a college as a business major without even knowing all the requirements and classes I would need to graduate, and ultimately switched majors after realizing business was not for me.
3. EXERCISE AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.
The freshman fifteen is a real thing. In my case it was the freshman 39. DO NOT BE ME. Exercise every day, even if it’s just for thirty minutes. Get your body moving for a clearer mind and healthier body. And don’t forget about eating well (ignore too much junk food, alcohol, processed carbs and sugar). A healthy body works wonders not only on your physical appearance but on your brain. Don’t get sloppy.
4. BE OPEN.
To everything. New friends, new professors, new activities, new clubs or geek life. Try it all! You only get four years so make the most of it! Trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone can be scary, but it’s totally worth it.
5. DITCH YOUR HIGH SCHOOL RELATIONSHIP.
Okay, maybe not ditch if you and your partner have a good thing going, keep doing you. But be open! Don’t hold yourself hostage to a past relationship if it doesn't feel right, or you're not happy. College is about moving forward and finding yourself and new people.
6. CALL MOM.
Call your parents whenever you can. Let them know you’re alive. Ask them how they’re doing. Tell them you love them. They’ll appreciate it.
7. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP.
You are a baby. Seriously, this is probably your first time living away from your parents and it can be overwhelming. Do not be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help or a favor now and then! Everyone is in the same boat and trying just as hard as you are!
I hope this helps all you freshies out there! I know I didn’t cover too much on this post, but if you’d like more college content leave a comment below.
